Moreover, for those seeking an even deeper and more intense almond taste, a few drops of almond extract added to the batter can elevate these cookies to a whole new level of almond-infused bliss. Be warned, though – these cookies are so tempting that you might find yourself wanting to hide them away to savor every delectable bite! You might ask why the cookie has 3 blanched almonds: To bring joy to the Bethmann family, he adorned the sweets with four almonds each, one for each of the four sons Moritz, Karl, Alexander, and Heinrich. When Heinrich died in 1845 at the age of 24, the 'Bethmännchen' were only decorated with three almonds. |
HISTORY: Vanillekipferl is a traditional Austrian Christmas cookie originating from Vienna. These crescent-shaped cookies are quite popular in Europe and are often available for purchase in Viennese coffeehouses, especially around the holiday season.
The legend behind their shape is associated with the historic events of the Battle of Vienna in 1683 when the Viennese bakers supposedly created these crescent-shaped cookies resembling the Turkish crescent moon, as a celebration of the victory over the Ottoman Empire. The victory at the Battle of Vienna is considered a significant event in European history and is sometimes linked to the origin story of the Vanillekipferl cookies.
